Garage Door Weather Stripping

March 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Garage door weather stripping helps to keep the heat in the garage and prevents snow and rain from coming in around the door. It will ensure that the temperature in your garage will not go down below freezing even though the outside temperature is very low. This will make it easy for you to start your car during the cold weather months. Weather stripping for a garage door is usually tubular, but will compress when the door is down forming a barrier between the outside and the inside of the garage. The product comes with a vinyl flap to protect both the weather stripping and the bottom of the door.

The weather stripping will not interfere with the operation of the garage door in any way. It will actually work as a shock absorber as the door closes down and bangs against the concrete. You should take care when purchasing weather stripping because like other products you get what you pay for. It may be a bit more expensive, but having a better quality weather stripping will save you money in heating costs and prolong the life of your garage door.

There are two methods of applying weather stripping to the garage door. The first method involves having the wide lip outside and this is the way most people install the stripping. A second method of having the wide lip inside is the one you should use if the garage floor is lower than the driveway or in areas where ice build up is a common occurrence. You have to measure the width of the bottom of the door and cut the weather stripping to this size. You will ruin the weather stripping by stretching it so you do need to let if fall naturally along the length of the measuring tape. You nail the material to the bottom of the door, staggering the nails as you go along. Then you need to close the door to make sure that it does close properly. If it doesn’t you will need to make adjustments to the door-locking bar or enlarge the openings in the door channels.
